"Crazy Ridge": Asians
Following extraction, the tooth socket undergoes a healing process and series of changes, which include remodeling of the bone and alteration of the alveolar ridge dimensions. Management of the extraction socket can be challenging, especially in the esthetic zone. It has been documented that within 12 months of tooth extraction an average of 50% of resorption of the alveolar ridge can be expected to occur. Recently, an increasing body of evidence has reported that a substantial number of subjects from the Asian population demonstrated increased tooth-root-to-alveolus angulation. These data suggest that an impact from the management of the extraction socket defect and the implant placement timing must be considered due to an anatomic variation from the Caucasian population.
The lecture will review the relevant anatomic and surgical considerations in the Asian population. In addition, different regenerative techniques will be discussed to improve peri-implant soft and hard tissue defects.
At the end of the presentation, the participant should be able to
- recognize the potential additional risk presented by tooth-alveolus angulation when planning for implants in the anterior maxilla
- describe the relevant anatomic and surgical considerations for the Asian population with an emphasis on the anterior maxilla
- describe different regenerative techniques and options to improve peri-implant soft and hard tissue outcomes
