Osseointegration and Implant Surfaces
This lecture discusses the possibilities for enhanced osseointegration provided by modifications of the implant surface. These modifications have significantly improved the reliability of the oral implant. Whereas early implants had machined surfaces, moderately roughened implants are now common. As a result, preclinical and clinical studies show improved osseointegration. This lecture discusses current advancements with hydrophilic surfaces and reports outcomes, both preclinical and clinical, that show faster osseointegration and earlier, higher bone-to-implant contact.
At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…
- describe the evolution of implant surfaces
- discuss the importance of surface modification
- recognize the importance of using well-documented implant surfaces
