WS2024 - Short Implants – How to Plan and Place
ITI World Symposium 2024 lecture by Waldemar Polido - part of the "GBR/Bone Augmentation" session.
Several surgical techniques can be employed to vertically reconstruct atrophic alveolar bone. However, these ancillary techniques have higher morbidity and are technique sensitive, potentially leading to more complications in the hands of less experienced surgeons. The use of short implants is an alternative to adequately restore partially edentulous patients. Its use has grown exponentially on the last years due to great improvements on imaging, virtual planning, materials and techniques. Recently, ultra-short implants have been introduced, showing promising results for the rehabilitation of patients with severely resorbed alveolar ridges.

At the end of this lecture you should be able to...
- select the most appropriate short implant in alveolar ridges with deficient vertical bone dimension
- decide whether to use a short implant or carry out a bone regenerative intervention to place longer implants
- outline the risk factors associated with the use of short implants and be able to identify and treat the complications associated with their use
