About the Scholarship Center

Yonsei University is a top University in South Korea with a deep-rooted history as being the first ever modern-day hospital in Korea established in 1885. Yonsei University College of Dentistry is ranked as the best in South Korea and among the best dental schools in the world according to the QS ranking. The University campus is situated in Shinchon – a prime location next to the Seoul city center with vibrant atmosphere, student life and renowned architectural grandeur. A scholar is guaranteed to have an enjoyable time and experience the culture of Korea in the finest form at Yonsei.

The Department of Periodontology was established in 1974 and was the first-ever institution in Korea to publish a Periodontology textbook for dental students. Furthermore, Yonsei-Perio was the first to introduce the concept of guided tissue regeneration as well as dental implants to Korea in their early years of development. The foundation of Yonsei-Perio is built upon a strong passion for periodontal regeneration, exhibiting the highest clinical output in the entire country, generations of dedicated professors, and a strong research network connecting numerous renowned facilities across the globe.

The Research Institute for Periodontal Regeneration was established in 1995, which facilitates the full spectrum of research incorporating in vitro periodontal stem cells, translational animal models, and randomized controlled clinical trials. The professors at Yonsei-Perio are involved in global research, education and academic liaisons. The range of available research topics are diverse including periodontology, implantology, oral tissue regeneration, oral microbiology, systemic relationship and patient-centered care.

Overview of clinical activities during the Scholarship year Yonsei University Dental Hospital

Activities during the Scholarship year

During the Scholarship year, the ITI Scholar will participate in the following clinical activities: 

☒      Treatment planning sessions and seminars  
      ☒      Attend resident seminars for implant surgery planning sessions  
      ☒      Attend resident case presentations  
      ☒      Attend hands-on courses for key clinical skills over the entire year  

☒      Observing patient treatment  
☒      Assisting in patient treatment
☒      Laboratory and procedures associated with treatment  

 

The Perio department comprises 22 dental chair units and 5 surgery rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Also, there is a separate implant clinic with additional surgery rooms for advanced implant and related augmentation procedures. The Perio department works in close collaboration with the Prosthodontics department and the central laboratory, all of which are located on the same floor of the dental hospital. The scholar will have the chance to closely observe all clinical activities and participate in case discussions with the clinicians.

For the following reasons ITI Scholars are not normally able to treat patients: Legal issues in treating patients with a non-Korean dental license in Korea  

During the Scholarship year, the ITI Scholar will participate in the following research activities: 

☒      Development and coordinated involvement with existing center research activities 
☒       Involvement in preclinical research  
☒       Involvement in translational research  
☒      Involvement in clinical research   
☒      Mentors will be assigned to the Scholar according to their research preference  
☒      Scholars will be able to start their own research projects 

The Research Institute for Periodontal Regeneration facilitates a wide range of research possibilities from bench to clinic. The in vitro laboratory is in the Dental College building, in addition, there is the Avison Biomedical Research Center, a high-tech research facility with cutting edge equipment that supports in vivo translational experiments from small to large animals.

The Scholar's time will be allocated to the activities below as follows (estimate): 
 
•   30% patient care
•   40% research 
•   30% didactic (lectures and/or courses the Scholar can attend) 

The lectures, classes and/or courses the Scholar can attend will be held in the following language: Korean and English

The Scholar will be involved/enrolled in the following ITI activities: 
 
•   Yonsei Perio ITI Study Club meetings
•   Yonsei Prostho ITI Study Club meetings
•   ITI academic meetings in the section Korea

Clinical experience: 
☒  Minimum 3 years'clinical experience
☒  At least two years' postgraduate training in
    ☒  Periodontology
    ☒  Oral surgery
    ☒  Prosthodontics

Research experience: 
☒  Research experience supported by scientific publications is desired

Language requirements: 
☒  Fluency in English

Special requirements: 
Minimum 3 years' clinical experience. At least two years' postgraduate training in Periodontology, Oral surgery or Prosthodontics. Research experience supported by scientific publications is desired
