Congress Lecture
Prosthodontic Planning and Procedures
This lecture considers the incorporation of cantilever extensions into implant-supported prostheses as a viable option in situations where local conditions of the residual edentulous ridge preclude the possibility of placing an implant. The literature presented in this lecture substantially supports the conclusion that the incorporation of single cantilevers into implant-supported prostheses does not have a significant effect on the amount of peri-implant marginal bone loss. Literature also suggests that implant-supported fixed prostheses with crown-to-implant ratios greater than 1:2 do not correlate positively with marginal bone loss. This presentation also discusses fixed implant rehabilitations with multiple cantilevers in edentulous patients, showing that implant number and distribution along the edentulous ridge seem to influence the prosthodontic survival rates only in the maxilla.
