Airway Orthodontics-A Paradigm Shift
Course description:
A busy orthodontic practice is focused on bite rearrangement, aiming at straightening teeth and creating a functioning occlusion. In most instances, moderate-to-severe crowding cases are treated with extraction mechanics due to its predictability and defined time frame. The course of airway orthodontic approach has started long ago with protocols suggested by Isaacson in 1964, when a rapid palatal expansion had shown to produce maxillary skeletal expansion. Orthodontics have been routinely using both slow and rapid expansion protocols with conventional fixed palatal expanders until the development of mini-screw assisted palatal expansion. Dentists will learn about the variety of maxillary skeletal expansion devices, their specifications, indications, and side effects. The group will learn the orthodontic treatment sequence with skeletal expansion appliances.
Learning objectives:
• Indications for maxillary skeletal expansion
• Effects of maxillary skeletal expansion on nasal and oropharyngeal airways
• Orthodontic treatment sequence with maxillary skeletal expansion
• Protocols of maxillary skeletal expansion
• Retention after maxillary skeletal expansion
