Benefits and Pitfalls of Digital/Guided Surgery
Digital or computer-guided surgery has been widely used in maxillofacial surgery with great enthusiasm. There is substantial benefit to digital planning and surgical guide usage in mandibular reconstructions with fibula grafts. Benefits of guided surgery are presented through multiple case presentations during this lecture. Digital surgical guides include both mandibular resection guides, fibula harvesting guides, and customized milled titanium plates for mandibular fixation. Surgical guides are improving the accuracy of such complex operations, as precise bone-to-bone contact is crucial to the success of these surgical procedures. They substantially influence the efficiency of the surgical procedure and shorten the time needed to perform complex surgical treatments, which often involve two surgical teams.
At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…
- describe the use of guided surgery in mandibular resections/reconstructions
- recognize the benefits of computer-guided technology in complex surgical reconstructions
- discuss the indications for computer-guided flapless surgical procedures
