About the Scholarship Center
The ITI Scholarship at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, is based in the Department of Oral, Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Sciences. The department is home to both the Division of Periodontics and Prosthodontics, giving the scholar a unique and balanced exposure to surgical and restorative implant therapy. ITI Scholars work directly with Dr. El Kholy, the center chair, along with borard-certified periodontics and prosthodontic faculty. The clinical activities take place within the state-of-the-art Implantology Center at the Columbia University Medical Center. Applicants with demonstrated scholarly activity and/or specialty trainning or clinical experience are preferred.
Activities during the Scholarship year
During the Scholarship year, the ITI Scholar will participate in the following clinical activities:
☒ Treatment planning sessions
☐ Performing oral hygiene procedures and maintenance
☒ Observing patient treatment
☒ Assisting in patient treatment
☒ Treating patients under faculty supervision
☒ Placing implants
☒ Restoring implants
☐ Treating patients alone
☐ Placing implants
☐ Restoring implants
☐ Laboratory and procedures associated with treatment
ITI Scholars will need to obtain a limited license to work with patients. The Scholarship Center will determine the extent of patient treatment based on the progression of skills demonstrated by the scholar during their time in the Center.
During the Scholarship year, the ITI Scholar will participate in the following research activities:
☒ Development and coordinated involvement with existing center research activities
☒ Involvement in preclinical research
☒ Involvement in translational research
☒ Involvement in clinical research
☒ Mentors will be assigned to the Scholar according to their research preference
☒ Scholars will be able to start their own research projects (in this case, the project will be anticipated and will require a specific funding)
Research experience supported by scientific publications is desired
The Scholar's time will be allocated to the activities below as follows (estimate):
• 30% patient care
• 40% research
• 30% didactic (lectures and/or courses the Scholar can attend)
The lectures, classes and/or courses the Scholar can attend will be held in the following language: English

Language requirements:
☒ Fluency in English
☒ The following language is required to follow lectures, classes and/or courses: English
Special requirements:
- Minimum 3 years' clinical experience.
- At least two years' postgraduate training in Periodontology, Oral surgery or Prosthodontics.
- Research experience supported by scientific publications is desired.
The ITI Scholar must obtain and maintain their own medical health insurance. The ITI Scholar must also obtain or provide documentation that meets university requirements on all vaccinations necessary to be in patient-facing facilities and obtain the necessary health clearances prior to being granted access to patient serving areas.
