The Future of Implant Dentistry
The earliest descriptions of osseointegration applied this technology to the treatment of complete edentulism. Indeed this state of edentulism reflects the ultimate failure of the dental profession to address disease.
Dental implants, particularly those identified after the appreciation that direct bone-to-implant contact could be achieved, have provided predictable short and long-term outcomes for patients with dental disease.
Despite this remarkable increase in scientific knowledge it appears that much of the continuing education associated with implant dentistry is concentrated upon the achievement of remarkable results for a select few patients rather than the achievement of predictable results for the majority of the population.
Indeed the future of implant dentistry is not one that achieves near dental perfection but instead is one that provides a predictable clinical outcome for the average dental patient.
