Introduction to Implant Dentistry

Implant Characteristics: Materials, Surfaces, Design

David L Cochran

Reflecting 25 years of evolution in the use of endosseous dental implants, this lecture presents the state of the art in regard to implant materials, surface characteristics, and component designs. How do the biological tissues respond to different variations? Is one material or surface preferable to another, and if so, how should the clinician decide which to use? Does one component design result in more tissue apposition or tissue loss than another design? This lecture addresses all three questions using unique population-based data that reinforces the impact of different implant designs and surfaces on patient outcomes.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • recognize that a number of implant materials and surfaces are available and that specific testing can help evaluate how the body reacts to them
  • discuss the impact of implant and abutment design and implant placement on the host tissues: what these reactions are, and why they occur
  • recognize that unique data on the effectiveness of implants reinforces the impact of different implant designs and surfaces on patient outcomes
